These reports are the result of a collaborative
design effort between local public health, the Minnesota Department
of Health (MDH), and the Minnesota Hospital Association (MHA) to
provide information that is useful and can be compared to reports
prepared by the MDH. There are three different reports, each
prepared at the county level as well as the regional and state
level:
-
Discharges and Utilization Rates for Selected Diseases (comparable to
the General Mortality PDF report
found in the Minnesota Department of Health’s Minnesota Center for Health
Statistics, 2004 Minnesota Health Statistics Annual Summary report).
-
Five Leading Causes of Hospitalization (Excluding Births) by Age (includes
number of discharges, hospital days and charges)
-
Hospitalization Rates by Clinical Classifications Software (CCS) Chapter and
Age Group.
This data can be used by hospitals, public
health officials and others to gauge how to
prioritize health promotion efforts. For example, in the past,
public health officials have seen high levels of brain and spinal
cord injuries at a local level. This has resulted in
efforts to prevent such injuries, such as by targeting
youth bicycle riders by providing bike helmets to help minimize
the impact of accidents and preventing injuries that
can lead to long-term disability. Communities could use the
data to reach a number of different conclusions about what efforts
are most important to pursue, from targeting programs to prevent falls
among seniors or prevent poisoning among
children.
